Mary Delany at the Serpentine Gallery

Hoy aprovechando el solecito sali a correr al parque. De paso entre en la Serpentine Gallery a ver la ultima exhibicion, Rosemary Trockel, A Cosmos, 13 Feb - 7 Abr.  Y cual no seria mi sorpresa cuando me encontre alli con tres collages de Mary Delany, una artista del siglo XVIII que descubri al leer su biografia "Paper Garden". Fumaria , Parnassia and Primula. Tambien tenia Ms Trockel unos cuadros de inspiracion lanera, de lo mas moderno y facil de recrear, unas tiras de lana de colores a tono, parecidos a estos que encontre en unos libros de manualidades de los 70s que tengo por casa.

Today I went for a run in the park. Once there I popped into the Serpentine Gallery to check their latest exhibition by Rosemarie Trockel ,   (13 Feb - 7 Apr).  To my surprise I found they had three collages by Mary Delany as part of the exhibition, They had Fumaria, Parnassia and Primula. I am a fan of Mrs Delany ever since I read The Paper Garden a book about her life and work. I also found some more crafty inspiration from some wool canvases on display by Ms Trockel, which were very similar to these ones  (see photo above) from  a 1970s crafts book.

Limpiaplata natural - Nontoxic Silver cleaning

Me gusta la plata , pero no tanto el limpiarla, ni los productos toxicos que se usan para la labor. Andaba buscando una receta facil, libre de sustancias quimicas dañinas, que no necesitara frotar con imnumerables trapos. Di con muchas en decoesfera,  pero al final me quede con esta.

Agua / Sal / Papel de aluminio

Cortar un pedazo de papel de aluminio y ponerlo en un recipiente de cristal, echar agua caliente ( yo la puse hirviendo), añadir sal, mezclandola bien, sumergir la plata en el liquido  durante al menos 5 m. Sacar y secar, repetir hasta dejarla limpia. Para manchas rebeldes frotar con bicarbonato sodico.  Consultar con un joyero antes de usar la tecnica en piezas con piedras o perlas.
Curiosa como soy no me basto con limpiarla, en SaberCurioso me explicaron como funciona el proceso a nivel quimico. Ahora a mantenerla limpia con los consejos de la Biblioteca de Joyeria .

 

I like silver, not necessarily on cuttlery but on jewelry, but I dislike cleaning it, and do not like the harmful fumes emanating from the products used for the task. I have been searching for an easy recipe to clean silver, using natural products, and that would not involve endless shining with cloths. I found many in mother nature network,  but I settled with this one below.

Water / Salt / Aluminium foil

Line a glass bowl with foil, shine face up. Fill with boiling water, add the salt mixing well. Dip silver into bowl for 5 m., remove, rinse, and  wipe dry. Repeat if necessary. Check with an specialist before using the method on items with gems, porous material, antique pieces, etc, as it might damage them.

I was still curious as to what I had done, so I went and found out how does the chemistry of silver cleaning work.

Probando recetas y maquinaria - Testing equipment and recipes

Por fin me hice de una mini batidora. Es ideal para mezclar potingues en pequeñas cantidades. Algo que aprendi en el curso que hice pero olvide cuando trate de repetir la receta en casa. Esto termino con una base de miel en el fondo de mi tarro de balsamo limpiador.

Asi que nada mas comprar el juguetito, me puse manos a la obra y calente el balsamo, lo bati, e inmediatamento consiguio la consistencia que queria con la miel completamente homogeneizada en la mezcla. Y puesta ya decidi probar ha hacer esta receta de vaselina organica sin petrolatos de A delightful home. Pero no se que hice que quedo demasiado espesa y dificil de untar. Debo de haber puesto las proporciones equivocadas, porque la mia es bastante dificil de untar. Intentare añadirle mas aceite a ver si asi mejora.

Testing my latest toy, a milk frother. This is ideal to mix small amounts of homemade cosmetics, something I forgot when I made my  first batch of cleansing balm at home. I ended up with the honey in the recipe at the bottom of the jar, still usable but not as good.

Once I got the frother, my first though was to sort out this. In a matter of minutes I had my balm sorted, with better consistency with all the honey nicely incorporated.
Then I decided to try this recipe for an organic non petroleum vaseline from A delightful home.  Unfortunately this turned too thick and non spreadable. I must have mixed the wrong proportions or used the wrong kind of olive oil. Will try to rescue it later on by adding more oil to soften it.

Jabones de dulce - Sweet Soaps

Mi abuela hacia su propio jabon de lavar, y siempre quise aprender a hacerlo. Hace un par de meses fui a The Make Lounge y por fin aprendi. Estos fueron los primeros que hice, jabones de tocador. Maduraron a tiempo para Reyes y los envolvi para regalo como unos caramelitos. 

Ever since I saw my grandmother making her own laundry soap, I wanted to learn. Many years passed until I went to the Make Lounge in Islington and learnt to make cosmetic soap. 

They matured on time for Christmas and I gave them away as presents wrapped  up as candy.

Lecturas vacacionales / Holiday Crafty reads

Leyendo El maestro de la inocencia  de Tracy Chevalier no puedo evitar fijarme en como narra la escena en la que Anne y Maisie Kellaway hacen botones de Dorset para ganarse un dinerillo, una actividad comun alla por el siglo XVIII en el campo britanico . Describe incluso las variedades que hacían, las complicadas Blandford Cartwheels y los más sencillos Singletons, Birds Eyes y Dorset Crosswheels. Me gustan los botones hechos a mano, como ya dije  aquí. Es el tercer libro que leo de la autora y el que menos he disfrutado, el personaje principal , William Blake, no es eje del libro, su descripcion del Londres georgiano si, y por eso nada mas merece la pena leerlo.

I don't know how I do it but  always manage to find a crafty angle to what I do. While on holidays I read Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier, it caught my atention the description of the different types of Dorset buttons that the author makes, while her characters are crafting some to earn some money.  The book plot is built around William Blake, seem through the eyes of two children, similar to the Girl with a Pearl earring , the author's first novel. This one is less satisfaying, the main character is not as well drawn as in her first book.
