Jabones de dulce - Sweet Soaps

Mi abuela hacia su propio jabon de lavar, y siempre quise aprender a hacerlo. Hace un par de meses fui a The Make Lounge y por fin aprendi. Estos fueron los primeros que hice, jabones de tocador. Maduraron a tiempo para Reyes y los envolvi para regalo como unos caramelitos. 

Ever since I saw my grandmother making her own laundry soap, I wanted to learn. Many years passed until I went to the Make Lounge in Islington and learnt to make cosmetic soap. 

They matured on time for Christmas and I gave them away as presents wrapped  up as candy.

Leyendo El maestro de la inocencia  de Tracy Chevalier no puedo evitar fijarme en como narra la escena en la que Anne y Maisie Kellaway hacen botones de Dorset para ganarse un dinerillo, una actividad comun alla por el siglo XVIII en el campo britanico . Describe incluso las variedades que hacían, las complicadas Blandford Cartwheels y los más sencillos Singletons, Birds Eyes y Dorset Crosswheels. Me gustan los botones hechos a mano, como ya dije  aquí. Es el tercer libro que leo de la autora y el que menos he disfrutado, el personaje principal , William Blake, no es eje del libro, su descripcion del Londres georgiano si, y por eso nada mas merece la pena leerlo.

I don't know how I do it but  always manage to find a crafty angle to what I do. While on holidays I read Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier, it caught my atention the description of the different types of Dorset buttons that the author makes, while her characters are crafting some to earn some money.  The book plot is built around William Blake, seem through the eyes of two children, similar to the Girl with a Pearl earring , the author's first novel. This one is less satisfaying, the main character is not as well drawn as in her first book.

Trufas de avellana - Hazelnut truffles

A punto de acabar mi segunda tanda de trufas caseras. Nunca habia echo unas , y decidi lanzarme con esta esta receta sin azucar y la verdad es que no son dificiles. Las primeras con vainilla terminaron siendo regaladas, estas con licor Frangelico no va a dar tiempo.

My first chocolate making adventure last year ended with burnt chocolate, edible but not great looking. This year I gave it another go after seeing this simple recipe without sugar. I am about to finish the second batch of hazelnut truffles, the first flavored with vainilla was gifted away. I prefered this one with Frangelico liqueur, but I might make the third batch boozier, just to see how it turns up.

Ingredientes

175 ml double cream / nata

200 gr dark chocolate finely chopped / negro 70% finamente troceado

50 gr hazelnuts roughly chopped (roasted better) /avellanas tostadas y partidas

1 tblsp / 15 ml Frangelico or 1 tsp / 5 ml vainilla extract

colored sprinkles or edible glitters / fideos de chocolate, coco rallado, azucar coloreado para decorar

Preparation

Bring cream to boil, let it cool and pour over chocolate. Stir mixture until smooth, add liqueur or vainilla, hazelnuts and cover, let it rest it in fridge for 30 m. until thick but not solid. Pour sprikles into small plates. Using a teaspoon, roll mixture into balls with hands and coat them with the sprinkles, chill again to firm them up.  They will keep for 1 week if chilled or 1 month in freezer without the sprinklers.

Hervir la nata, dejarla enfriar y mezclarla con el chocolate hasta que quede homogenea.

Añadir las avellanas y el licor o esencia, cubrir y dejar reposar en el frigorifico durante 30 m. hasta que espese, pero sin que llege a estar solido. Poner los fideos de chocolate, coco rallado etc en platitos. Con la ayuda de cucharitas de cafe tomar porciones de chocolate y darle forma, cubriendo las trufas con los fideos , coco, etc. Duran 1 semana en el frigorifico, 1 mes en el congelador sin la cobertura.

Washi Tape

Llege tarde pero a tiempo de descubrir esta cinta de papel japonesa que se usa para manualidades y decoracion. Debe de ser tendencia por Francia a juzgar por la cantidad de libros y variedad de estilos que tenian en la libreria Flammarion del Centro Pompidou el mes pasado. Me costo decidirme entre mas de 20 variedades, me traje unas muestras en mi agenda y un rollo con marcos. Unos dias mas tarde encontre en Islington los rollos en rojo y blanco, su primer uso decorar estos regalos de Navidad. Claro que segun estos videos se pueden usar tambien para decorar muebles, paredes, etc.

A promotional stand at a bookshop in Paris let me to washi tape, a decorative Japanese masking tape. It was difficult to choose between 20+ styles. I got a frame design, which I also will use to label my diy cosmetics. Pity I don’t know French as they had several crafts books on the subject. A few days after my return, I found some cheery red tape designs in Islington. I have since found out about its uses in home décor thanks to these videos by MTcasa.

Exfoliando - Scrubbing

Un experimento que hice el otro dia, unas exfoliantes a base de aceite de aguacate (40 ml aprox.) y azucar moreno grueso (100 gr aprox). Dos versiones, tonificante con aceite de geranio (10 gts), menta (5 gts)y tomillo (5 gts) inspirado en cierto aceite tonificante de una marca francesa a base extractos de plantas cuyo nombre empieza por C. La otra vigorizante con aceites de lima (10 gts), lavanda (10 gts)y bergamota  (8gts).

Experimenting with some body scrub recipes, made with avocado oil (40 ml aprox) and demerara sugar (100gr aprx). I prepared two versions a toning one with geranium (10 dps), peppermint(5 dps) and thyme oil (5 dps), inspired on my favorite toning oil from a french brand known for its botanical ingredients. The second one was an energising blend of lime (10 dps), lavander (10 dps) and bergamot oil (8 dps).

Perfume

 Esto de hacer potingues nunca acaba, si acaso se expande con nuevos productos que me gustaria hacer y tecnicas que aprender. En la foto mis lecturas sobre el tema cortesia de la biblioteca local y mis primeras aguas de colonia, la de la derecha me encanta, la otra puede mejorarse.



Potion making  its like a bug, the more I know the more I want to know. While searching for information on cosmetics I came accross perfume making and now I after reading these two books I tried making eau de cologne. I prepared two recipes, one smells great (bigger jar) the other can do with some changes.
