Helen Rodel y su coleccion con punto de garbanzos - Helen Rodel and her Crochet Popcorn collection

Fue lo primero que se me ocurrio al ver este video de la coleccion de prendas a ganchillo de la diseñadora Helen Rodel para su coleccion del año 2011. El punto tiene una textura muy interesante , aunque he de reconocer que no lo encuentro adecuado para una prenda de verano ya que la repeticion del punto resulta en una prenda gruesa  y pesada. Mi madre tiene unas colchas de lana con este punto que tejio mi abuela que abrigan y pesan lo suyo.

I saw this video about Helen Rodel the brasilian fashion crochet designer 2011 collection and my first thought was about the stich she was using on the pieces. I know it as chickpea stich, in UK is called popcorn, a very tactile and interesting stich particularly when used it to define shapes in the middle of flat surfaces as it adds a tridimensional effect. I wonder which type of yarn was used as the stich eats lots of it resulting in heavy pieces if used all over items.

Suzy Menkes por Christie's

La editora debe de andar corta de espacio por sus armarios y subasta algunas piezas. Aprovechando que estaba cerca me pase por Christie's y eche un vistazo. Variedad hay :  Pucci, Lacroix, Saint Laurent, Chanel, Hermes, mi favorito el britanico Ossie Clark, me gusta su linea y los estampados de su mujer Celia Birtwell. Con £200 libras  no seria dificil conseguir algun pañuelo del guardarropa de la Menkes, pero me contento con mi copia de su libro Knitwear Revolution .

The fashion editor must be running of space in her wardrobe and is auctioning some clothes online at Christie's. I was running some errands nearby  last Saturday and popped in for a look. In my fashion, as is named the collection has a mixture of French and British design, my favourites were the Ossie Clark dresses (I like his fluid line and the  prints by his wife Celia Birtwell)  and the Bill Gibbs sketches. I might do with my copy of Ms Menkes book Knitwear Revolution and will pass on the auction.

Por / Around Berwick Street

Paseando por Soho en el dia del desfile del Orgullo Gay (que nos perdimos) terminamos en Berwick Street. El ultimo vestigio en Londres de la industria de la confeccion hoy en dia casi inexistente gracias a las importaciones mas baratas de ayende los mares abastecen a las cadenas de la High Street britanica.  Alli se pueden encontrar sedas, encajes e incluso materiales tradicionales britanicos como el Harris Tweed o  los tartans escoceses.  No miran solo al pasado sino que apuestan por nuevos materiales como el trapillo, las fotos hablan por si solas, un escaparate donde usando tecnicas de macramé hacen con el cinturones , collares etc. Otra cosa que  disfruto observando es el ingenio y habilidad de los escaparatistas para vestir un maniqui con piezas de tejido sin cortar, diseñando modelos de lo mas original, interesante e intricado a base de alfileres y dobleces.

Strolling along Oxford Street with some visitors we ended up in Berwick Street and its market. I have been meening to visit this area to check out their textiles shops. I enjoy seen materials, the displays made with them and new stuff coming into the market. The latter came in the form of t-shirt cotton yarn which was used to create some belts and adornments using macrame tecniques. 

Salida - Going out

A la Royal Academy el domingo pasado a ver la Exhibicion de Verano. Por Picadilly nos encontramos las banderitas celebrando el jubileo de diamante de la reina, y a esta Lolita japonesa y su vestido con estampado sobre el tema y cinta en la cintura mencionando el tema tambien. Me sorprendio ver el jubileo como tema de moda entre las lolitas japonesas. De la exhibicion me quedo con la serie de tapices de Grayson Perry "the Vanity of Small Differences", una critica social muy ingeniosa .

To the Royal Academy last Sunday to see their Summer Exhibition. Strolling along Picadilly we found the street decorated with flags commemorating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, as well as this Lolita who was doing the same with her dress's print, it was full of stamps showing the Queen, the ribbon on her waist mentioned the Jubilee as well. I  was surprised to find the Jubilee used as a fashion theme by japanese Lolitas.  From the exhibition my favorite piece was the tapestry series "The Vanity of Small Differences" by Grayson Perry. A modern  and witty take of a Rake's progress.



Sabanas estilo Audubon - Audubon inspired sheets

Me despierto con pajaros en mis sabanas bordadas a punto de cruz. La conexion con el estilo vino al leer en una revista algo sobre una exhibicion de dibujos del naturalista, ornitologo e ilustrador franco-americano John James Audubon , imagenes de su obras aqui.

Clearing some old magazines I came accross some exhibition about  the works of John James Audubon a naturalist, painter  and illustrator. I read that in bed covered by these cross-stiched sheets and could not help but stablishing a connection. See some Audubon birds here.

Feria de verano - Summer Fayre

Con el verano y el buen tiempo (es un decir) llegan las ferias y festivales locales. Empezamos el domingo pasado  la Feria de Verano de  Marylebone y seguimos ayer miercoles la de Connaught Street. Suelen tener una mezcla de atraciones para niños y adultos, y a veces como en la de ayer concursos de distinto tipo, en este caso de perros (patrocinado por la clinical canina local) donde elegian al mas distinguido, simpatico, etc. La revista Monocle organizo su feria al mismo tiempo que la de Marylebone que por cierto tiene cerquita, pero me fue imposible asistir debido a la torcedura de tobillo de mi pareja, en fin me consolare con estas fotos del evento, otra vez sera.

I enjoyed the street entertainment and colourful decorations at the Marylebone Summer Fayre last Sunday and the Connaught Street  Summer  Festival yesterday. The urban version of the local festivities in other regions and countries, unfortunately there are not many of them organised this days.
